The disciples are experienced fishermen, and this storm terrifies even them — waves breaking into the boat, genuine danger of drowning. Jesus, meanwhile, is asleep in the stern. They wake him, half-panicked, half-accusing: “Teacher, do you not care that we are perishing?”
He gets up, speaks three words to the wind and waves — “Peace! Be still!” — and it’s immediately calm. Then he turns to them: “Why are you so afraid? Have you still no faith?” (Mark 4:38-40)
That question isn’t a scolding for having been afraid in a genuinely dangerous storm. It’s pointing at something underneath the fear — they’d seen Jesus heal the sick and cast out demons, yet somehow still doubted whether he was present and capable in THIS crisis, with them, in the boat. The fear wasn’t really about the storm’s power. It was about a gap between what they’d already seen him do and what they believed he’d do now.
That gap is worth noticing in your own fear too. It’s rarely just about the size of the storm. It’s often about whether you actually believe the same Jesus who’s met you before is in the boat with you now.
Reflect: What’s your current storm, and where’s the gap between what you know God has done before and what you’re afraid he won’t do now?
Prayer: Lord, calm my storm if it’s your will — but even before you do, calm the doubt that says you’re not here with me in it. Amen.
