Freedom from Addiction

πŸ“… 6 days πŸ“– 8 verses/day Intermediate

6 days of Scripture and hope for anyone caught in a destructive, repeating pattern they can't seem to break free from alone.

Addiction β€” to a substance, a behavior, anything that’s gained control over you β€” is one of the most isolating struggles there is. This plan offers six days of honest hope for breaking free.

Day 1 β€” Enslaved to What Masters You

Read 2 Peter 2:19.

“Whatever overcomes a person, to that he is enslaved.” Scripture names this pattern honestly β€” whatever has mastered you has functionally become your master, regardless of what it is.

Try this: Name honestly, without minimizing, what currently has mastery over you.

Day 2 β€” The Struggle Is Real

Read Romans 7:15, 18-19.

Paul’s own honest confession β€” doing the very thing he hates, unable to do the good he wants β€” is Scripture’s own acknowledgment that this struggle is real, even for mature believers.

Try this: Let Paul’s honesty give you permission to be honest about your own struggle, without excessive shame.

Day 3 β€” The Way of Escape

Read 1 Corinthians 10:13.

Every temptation comes with a way of escape, even when it doesn’t feel like it β€” God’s faithfulness includes providing an actual exit, not just forgiveness after the fact.

Try this: Identify, concretely, what the “way of escape” looks like the next time this specific temptation arises.

Day 4 β€” Confession Brings Healing

Read James 5:16.

“Confess your sins to one another… that you may be healed.” Isolation feeds addiction; confession and community are described as part of the healing process itself.

Try this: Consider confessing this struggle to a trusted person, if you haven’t already, rather than fighting it alone.

Day 5 β€” A New Creation

Read 2 Corinthians 5:17.

“If anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation.” Your identity isn’t ultimately defined by the addiction, however long it’s had a grip on you.

Try this: Speak this truth over yourself today, specifically against the identity the addiction has tried to assign you.

Day 6 β€” Freedom Indeed

Read John 8:34-36.

“If the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.” Real, total freedom is described as available through Christ β€” not a lifelong management strategy alone, but genuine liberation.

Try this: Pray specifically for this freedom today, and take one concrete step toward it β€” professional help, community, accountability.

Closing thought: This struggle is real, and it’s also not the final word on who you are or where your story ends. Freedom is offered, often through honest confession and real community, not white-knuckled isolation.
