Jesus taught constantly in parables — ordinary stories carrying extraordinary meaning. This plan spends a day with seven of his most well-known ones.
Day 1 — The Sower
Read Matthew 13:1-9, 18-23.
Same seed, four different soils, four different outcomes. The parable isn’t really about the sower or the seed — it’s an invitation to examine what kind of soil your own heart currently is.
Try this: Honestly assess: which soil describes how you’re receiving God’s word right now?
Day 2 — The Prodigal Son
Read Luke 15:11-24.
The younger son’s return gets most of the attention, but notice the father — running to meet him while he’s still far off, before a single word of apology is spoken.
Try this: Is there a “far off” place you’ve been avoiding coming back from, assuming the welcome wouldn’t be there?
Day 3 — The Good Samaritan
Read Luke 10:25-37.
Told in answer to “who is my neighbor,” Jesus’s answer redefines the question entirely — not “who deserves my help” but “who acted like a neighbor.”
Try this: Who has Jesus put in your path today that you could “cross the road” for, instead of passing by?
Day 4 — The Lost Sheep
Read Luke 15:3-7.
Ninety-nine safe sheep, and the shepherd goes after the one that wandered. This isn’t a story about the sheep’s effort to find its way back — it’s about being pursued.
Try this: If you feel like the one who wandered, remember: this parable says you’re the one being sought.
Day 5 — The Persistent Widow
Read Luke 18:1-8.
A widow with no power wears down an unjust judge through sheer persistence — and Jesus’s point isn’t that God is reluctant like the judge, but the opposite: how much more will a good God respond to persistent prayer.
Try this: Is there a prayer you’ve given up repeating? Bring it again today.
Day 6 — The Talents
Read Matthew 25:14-30.
Three servants, entrusted with different amounts, judged not by how much they were given but by what they did with it. The servant who buried his talent out of fear is the one rebuked — not the ones who risked using theirs.
Try this: What has God entrusted to you that fear has kept buried instead of used?
Day 7 — The Wise and Foolish Virgins
Read Matthew 25:1-13.
Ten virgins waiting for a bridegroom, five prepared with enough oil, five not. The warning is about being ready for a wait that’s longer than expected, not just showing initial enthusiasm.
Try this: What would it look like to prepare for the long wait, not just the exciting start?
Closing thought: Parables work by hiding truth in plain sight — simple enough to remember, deep enough to keep unpacking for a lifetime. Come back to these seven again; they’ll say something new each time.
