Chosen Before the Foundation of the World

August 7, 2026 · 2 min read · Evereth Duncan

“He chose us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and blameless before him. In love he predestined us for adoption to himself as sons through Jesus Christ.” (Ephesians 1:4-5)

There’s a particular kind of insecurity that treats your place in God’s family as tenuous — something recently and barely secured, that could just as easily be revoked. This passage pushes hard against that. Paul doesn’t describe God’s choosing as a reaction to anything about you. It happened “before the foundation of the world” — before you existed to earn or disqualify yourself from anything.

“Adoption” is deliberate language too. Adoption isn’t a biological inevitability — it’s a decision, made in love, to bring someone in who wasn’t there by default. You weren’t grudgingly accepted into God’s family after proving yourself worthy. You were chosen, in love, before any of that was even possible to prove.

This doesn’t erase your choices or your responsibility now — the passage still calls you toward holiness. But it locates your security somewhere much older and steadier than your current performance: a decision made before time itself, not one still hanging in the balance based on how today goes.

Reflect: Do you relate to God more like someone barely holding onto a tenuous acceptance, or someone chosen before the world began? What would it look like to actually rest in the second one?

Prayer: Father, thank you for choosing me in love before I could do anything to earn it. Let that truth settle my insecurity today. Amen.
