“There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.” (Romans 8:1)
“Now” is doing real work in this sentence. Not “eventually,” not “once you’ve proven yourself” — now, already, a present-tense legal verdict, not a future hope. If you’re in Christ, the condemnation you might still be carrying around — from your past, from your own self-judgment, from an accuser who wants you to feel perpetually on trial — has already been overturned.
This comes right after Romans 7, where Paul describes his own agonizing struggle with sin in painfully honest terms — “I do not do the good I want, but the evil I do not want is what I keep on doing.” Romans 8:1 isn’t written to people who’ve gotten their act together. It’s written into the middle of that exact struggle, as the answer to it.
Self-condemnation often masquerades as humility or conviction, but it’s actually a rejection of this verdict — insisting on trying yourself again for something the cross already settled. Living free of condemnation doesn’t mean sin stops mattering. It means the verdict on YOU, specifically, isn’t up for re-litigation anymore.
