“The point is this: whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows bountifully will also reap bountifully. Each one must give as he has decided in his heart, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.” (2 Corinthians 9:6-7)
This passage comes in the middle of Paul organizing a relief collection for believers in Jerusalem, and he’s careful, throughout the whole section, not to make it a guilt trip. He explicitly doesn’t want reluctant giving, or giving “under compulsion” — giving that happens because you’d feel too embarrassed to say no. He wants something else: a decision made in the heart, cheerfully, before the ask even lands.
That’s a much higher bar than just writing the check. It means examining not just whether you give, but what’s happening internally while you do it — resentment, obligation, and quiet self-congratulation are all possible even when the amount looks generous from the outside. God isn’t primarily auditing the number. He’s watching the heart behind it.
The “sow sparingly / sow bountifully” language isn’t a formula for getting rich by giving more — it’s describing a spiritual reality about generosity itself: a life held open-handed tends to keep receiving in ways a closed fist never will, not necessarily financially, but in the freedom that comes from not gripping so tightly to what you have.
Reflect: Think of the last time you gave something — money, time, attention. Was it cheerful, or was there some reluctance underneath it?
