Delight Yourself in the Lord

September 28, 2026 · 2 min read · Evereth Duncan
Psalm 37:4

“Delight yourself in the Lord, and he will give you the desires of your heart.” (Psalm 37:4)

This verse gets treated sometimes like a transaction — delight in God as the input, and whatever you already wanted as the output, guaranteed. But read in context (a psalm largely about not envying the wicked and trusting God’s justice over time), it’s pointing at something different: as you actually delight in the Lord — genuinely enjoying and treasuring him, not using him as a means to something else — your DESIRES themselves start to change.

The desires of a heart that delights in God increasingly look like what God himself desires. It’s not “get what you already wanted by performing delight correctly.” It’s “the more you actually delight in him, the more your wants reshape around what he wants too” — and THOSE desires, the ones increasingly aligned with him, are what get fulfilled.

This shifts the whole posture from transactional to relational. You’re not delighting in God as a strategy to unlock outcomes. You’re delighting in him because he’s actually delightful — and trusting that a heart genuinely oriented toward him ends up wanting good things, the kind he’s glad to give.

Reflect: Are you currently using delight in God as a strategy for something else, or actually delighting in him for who he is?

Prayer: Lord, let me actually delight in you today — not as a means to something else, but because you are worth delighting in. Reshape my desires to match yours. Amen.
