“For freedom Christ has set us free; stand firm therefore, and do not submit again to a yoke of slavery.” (Galatians 5:1)
The Galatian church was being pressured to add religious requirements — specifically circumcision and law-keeping — on top of faith in Christ, as if grace alone weren’t quite enough. Paul’s response is fierce, because he sees exactly what’s at stake: a slow slide back into slavery, dressed up as spiritual maturity.
It’s worth asking whether you’ve done something similar — not with circumcision, but with your own version of “I’m only acceptable to God if I also do X.” Extra rules, extra performance, extra proof you’re worthy of the freedom you were already given. That’s not maturity. Paul calls it a yoke of slavery, and warns against submitting to it “again” — implying it’s a regression, not progress.
Freedom in Christ isn’t freedom to do whatever you want. Paul spends the rest of this chapter describing what real freedom produces — the fruit of the Spirit, love working itself out. But it IS freedom from having to earn what’s already been given. Standing firm in that isn’t passive. It takes active resistance against the pull back toward performance.
Reflect: What “yoke” have you quietly added back onto grace, as if it weren’t sufficient on its own?
