“The heart of man plans his way, but the Lord establishes his steps.” (Proverbs 16:9)
This isn’t an argument against planning. Scripture elsewhere praises diligence, foresight, and wise preparation. It’s an argument against believing your plan is the final word on where your life actually goes. You plan the way — genuinely, thoughtfully — and God establishes the steps, sometimes matching your plan closely, sometimes redirecting it entirely.
This can be read as either frustrating or freeing depending on where you’re standing. Frustrating, if you’re holding tightly to a specific outcome you’ve engineered and don’t want interrupted. Freeing, if you’ve been anxious about getting every decision exactly right, as if the whole trajectory of your life rests on your own planning accuracy.
It doesn’t mean plans don’t matter, or that trying is pointless. It means you’re not actually the one ultimately establishing the steps, no matter how carefully you plan the way — and that’s not a threat to your life going well. It’s the reason it can, even when your own plans don’t survive contact with what actually happens.
Reflect: Where have you been gripping a plan tightly, as if establishing the steps were entirely up to you?
Prayer: Lord, I plan my way, but I trust you to establish my steps — even when they don’t match what I expected. Amen.
