Jesus meets a woman at a well who has been married five times and is currently living with a man she isn’t married to — someone whose life, by every indication, has been a search for something that never quite satisfies. He doesn’t lead with that. He leads with an offer.
“Everyone who drinks of this water will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks of the water that I will give him will never be thirsty again. The water that I will give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life.” (John 4:13-14)
“This water” — the well water she keeps returning to, day after day — is a picture of every source we go back to repeatedly hoping it will finally be enough: a relationship, an achievement, a substance, an approval we keep chasing. It quenches for a moment and then you’re thirsty again, back at the well.
Jesus offers something categorically different — not another trip to the well, but a spring INSIDE you that doesn’t run dry. This isn’t a promise that desire disappears. It’s a promise that the source of genuine satisfaction stops being something external you have to keep returning to, and becomes something welling up from within, sustained by him.
Reflect: What’s the “well” you keep returning to, hoping this time it’ll finally be enough?
Prayer: Jesus, I’m tired of wells that don’t satisfy. Give me the living water only you can give. Amen.
