“For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast.” (Ephesians 2:8-9)
There’s a quiet exhaustion that comes from believing, even subconsciously, that your standing with God is something you have to keep maintaining — a scoreboard where a bad week puts you behind and a good one catches you up. Paul is directly dismantling that idea here. Salvation is grace, received through faith, and specifically NOT a result of works — stated twice in two verses, in case the point wasn’t landing the first time.
“So that no one may boast” is the reason given for why it has to work this way. If salvation could be earned, even partially, you’d have grounds to compare yourself favorably against someone who’s earned less — a scoreboard, a hierarchy, a reason to look down. Grace removes that possibility entirely by removing the thing you’d be boasting about. You didn’t do this. It was given.
This doesn’t mean effort or obedience don’t matter — the very next verse talks about being created for good works. But those works are the RESULT of already being saved, not the PRICE of it. You’re not working to earn a standing you already have. You’re living out of a standing you’ve already been given.
Reflect: Are you carrying around a scoreboard with God that grace already erased? What would it look like to actually rest in “not a result of works”?
